How to Lighten Your Hair Naturally

Although the last few months have felt like summer here in Weston, Florida, it’s now official for the rest of the country. Every summer, Patrick Taleb Salon gets a ton of requests to lighten our client’s locks. We are happy to oblige; but we also wanted to give our readers some great tips on how to naturally lighten your hair during these summer months.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice has been known as nature’s peroxide. For ages, this technique has been used by men and women to naturally lighten hair. According to BlackClipin.com “One fresh lemon will give you approximately two tablespoons of lemon juice. Mix this juice with approximately six tablespoons of water and rub it into your dry hair. Instead of diluting lemon juice with water, you can use hair conditioner. Brush the mixture through unwashed hair and sit in the sun for twenty minutes. Wash your hair as usual, and you should find a natural-looking lightness begin to emerge.”

Chamomile Tea

This technique is not as commonly known as lemon juice, but it’s just as effective. In fact, chamomile is one of the most popular ingredients found in most lightening shampoos and conditioners. You can apply directly to your hair or add to your current shampoo and conditioner to encourage gradual lightening. We’ve found some great recipes from EHow.com that will explain how to achieve this at home.

Honey

Honey actually contains traces of hydrogen peroxide, making it the perfect ‘au natural’ lightener for your hair! Natural News suggests “Mix a tablespoon of honey with a cup of water and let it sit for thirty minutes to allow the peroxide to develop. Then coat hair completely with the mixture and allow it to sit for at least 20 minutes. After applying the mixture, you can also cover hair with saran wrap and leave overnight. For an intense overnight moisture treatment, add a tablespoon of olive oil to the mix.”

Sun

The sun is the key ingredient for all these natural hair-lightening techniques, but it can also lighten your hair all on its own. Take a dip in the ocean or pool and let your hair dry naturally in the sun. You will notice a subtle difference in your color. As always, make sure to use sunscreen whenever you are exposed to the sun.  Yes, even your hair needs sunscreen protection!
